Oregon Walk the Land Day

On Saturday, June 24th, land trusts across Oregon want you to get outside and learn about the collective conservation efforts across the state.

Columbia Land Trust invites you to take a leisurely, self-guided trip to our Twilight Marsh property on Saturday, June 24th for Oregon Walk the Land Day. Located just eight miles east of Astoria in Cathlamet Bay, the marsh offers excellent birdwatching and a magical wetland scene in the Columbia River Estuary.

About Twilight Marsh:

The 76-acre property, conserved by Columbia Land Trust in 2008, consists of tidal wetlands in the lower Columbia River Estuary at the base of the Bear Creek Watershed. It’s named after the Twilight Creek that runs into the site. It’s just 20 miles upstream from the Pacific Ocean and a short drive from Astoria’s city limits. The marsh serves as a critical wetland ecosystem to migratory birds and federally listed species of salmon and steelhead. 

Columbia Land Trust conserved the site to protect a high-quality wetland system for salmonid rearing and migration, and to provide habitat for bald eagles and a variety of shorebirds, waterfowl, and other wetland species.  Funds to purchase Twilight Marsh were provided by the Washington Salmon Recovery Funding Board, Lower Columbia Estuary Partnership-Bonneville Power Administration, and the Collins Foundation.

Directions:

From Highway 30, turn north onto Burnside Loop Road, located 3 miles east of where Highway 30 crosses the John Day River. Travel a few hundred yards on Burnside Loop Road and park along the road shoulder.
